Call to artists

1st Annual Juried Portrait Competition and Exhibition
The 1st Annual Juried Portrait Competition and Exhibition will be held at The Art Guild Gallery at Elderfields Preserve located at 200 Port Washington Blvd, Manhasset, NY from October 13-November 28, 2008.  All artists are invited to submit CDs or DVDs of their 2D or 3D work. Any medium is acceptable but no photographs, reproductions or giclees please. Quality of draftsmanship and values will be taken into consideration.

The exhibit will be juried by award winning portrait artist, Ying-He Liu, who is represented by seven portrait galleries in the US, and who served as faculty member at the Portrait Society of America's10th National Conference in 2008. Visit www.yingheliu.com for more information.

1st Place - $1,000, 2nd Place - $500, 3rd Place - $250.   

All entries must be postmarked by Sept. 24, 2008.

New Works of Merit Playwriting Contest
New Works of Merit Playwriting Contest is accepting scripts through July 15, 2008 for new works that:
1) Enhance self-realization
2) Support peace and social justice
3) Foster new understanding of minority issues that focus on racial, ethnic and gender discrimination both in the United States and abroad
4) Empower youth to build healthy inner foundations
5) Educate to gain further insight into healthy social/emotional living
6) Shed new light on religious, spiritual, and cultural differences and issues
7) Build respect for cultural expression and identity in a world that is experiencing rapid globalization
8) Explore the widening gap between the values this country was founded on and the values we present to the world today.

Choreography for Camera Workshop
Director/Cinematographer/Choreographer Ben Dolphin will lead a 6.5 hour Choreography for Camera workshop on September 13, 2008. Intended as an introduction to empower choreographers to work on their own or with a cinematographer, the workshop will explore the basics of dance filmaking vocabulary and techniques in a hands-on workshop.

The course will make choreographers comfortable with the language of filmaking and will cover the entire process of realizing a film, from preproduction to editorial finishing. Topics such as lens selection & properties, time compression and extension, point of view, creating an arsenal of shots to ensure adequate coverage during the Editorial process, storyboarding, Camera Movement, different editing options, cutting on a movement and final format selection will all be addressed.

Dance on Camera Festival Submissions
DFA's 37th annual Dance On Camera Festival will be held January 7-16, 2009 at the Walter Reade Theater, Lincoln Center Plaza, 165 West 65th Street, New York City, and other venues still to be announced. The oldest annual dance film/video festival in the world, the Dance On Camera Festival has been co-sponsored by the Film Society of Lincoln Center since 1996 and has toured to over 75 venues internationally.

Each fall, Dance Theater Workshop holds auditions
to select six choreographers for a yearlong program
that begins with nine hours of studio rehearsal time
leading up to performances at Dance Theater Workshop's Bessie Schönberg Theater as part of the Fresh Tracks Series. Residencies

Keyholder Residency
The Keyholder Residency Program offers emerging artists free
24-hour access to professional printmaking facilities to develop new work and foster their artistic careers. Residencies are free and one year long, starting on April 1st and October 1st each year, and they take place in the Artists’ Studio, including the solvent/etching area and the darkroom.
Keyholder Residency includes:
• 24-hour studio access
• $500 stipend
• storage space
• basic supplies (newsprint, blotters, solvents, cleaners)
• 20% discount on all Printshop classes
• free digital documentation of selected works produced during the residency
• inclusion in the Printshop's permanent art and image collection

Light Works Artist in Residence program

Light Works invites 12-15 artist to participate in its Artist in Residence
program to live in Syracuse for one month. They receive a $2,000 stipend, an apartment to stay in, private darkroom, and 24-hour access to Light Work's facility. All artist working in photography and related media are eligible to apply to the program. There is no application form or deadline.
